Gig Review:
Newcastle Male Voice Choir Gala Charity Concert
Saturday 17th April 2010
St George's Church, Newcastle.
Featuring soloists Denise Leigh, winner of the Channel Four show Operatunity, and "young" tenor PHILIP CARTWRIGHT!!!!
(** Young? My @rse! **)
Yes the same Philip Cartwright we all know from our Michelin days, only in upper case. Phil has sneaked off in the intervening years and learned how to sing. He is also (by his own admission) trying to become like Pavorotti and has partly succeeded in the body shape department.
During the concert Phil performed a romantic duet with Denise. For this they stand very close together. At this range Phil should really be wearing ear defenders as Denise can probably output about 120 decibels. Phil also took great care to resist fondling areas of Denise strictly out of bounds outside of marriage.
One memorable moment was when Denise missed a top note at the end of a song and cursed "shit" under her breath before repeating the last phrase. The problem was that "under her breath" is very loud when your a sorprano so everyone heard.
Joking apart, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Seven English pounds well spent I'd say. It was the strangest experience to hear sounds like that coming out of your old mate's lungs when you've never even heard him sing before. Phil can be heard up and down the country at various events thoughout the year. His reputation is spreading but the "young" tag must surely be wearing out!
Well done Phil! It's not the last time I'll show up to a gig.
