Dennis Herod
Died on the 16 December 2009 aged 87. He was the last surviving member of the Stoke City squad which came close to winning the First Division title in 1947.

Words pinched from Nigel Johnson, the voice of Stoke City:
Perhaps one of the most intriguing injuries involved the Stoke City goalkeeper Dennis Herod. The Potters travelled to Aston Villa in February 1952, and 40,000 fans were packed into Villa Park.

Stoke went two up in the first half-hour but Herod sustained an injury which turned out to be a broken arm when the Villa notched their first goal before the break.

Although he tried to carry on in goal he had to give way to outfield colleague Sammy Smythe. Dennis was packed out onto the left wing, and five minutes into the second-half rifled in City's third goal! Villa added a consolation second late in the game but Herod was the hero! No substitutes were allowed in those days so Dennis was obliged to stay on the pitch for 'nuisance value'.

He made sure that he gave good value!

Well said Nigel

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COLD:
On Friday when I arrived in Stone it so cold I photographed the readout in the car:

Ooh! That's Chilly!

A like minded reader did the same thing and out-dibbed me by 4 degrees!
Ooh! That's even Chillier!

This proved two things: 1, Mobile phones are really useful for stupid things like photographing the dials in the car and 2, Radio 4 is MUCH further away than Radio 2.

Happy Birthday Elvis!
75 today. Well he would have been if the burgers and prescription drugs hadn't gotten the better of him. Apparently he was a big Monty Pyton fan.

Let's enjoy one of Elvis's favourites:

X-FACTOR PROTEST.
Christmas has become the traditional time for a number one single by the newly crowned X-Factor winner. Not this time!! There was a Facebook campaign to keep them off the top spot at Christmas and it worked. Rage Against the Machine were the unlikely number one at Christmas. Proceeds from the protest were donated to charity.
NUMB3R PL4T3S:
Those of us still residing in the UK may have noticed the increased popularity of "personalised" number plates. A "4" generally represents an "A" but a 7 seems to adaptable as many letters when trying to make a plate say something it clearly doesn't. Some seem so cryptic you can't actually tell what they are supposed to be, others require carefully placed black mounting screws to change an "H" into "A". Well done to the DVLA for selling us these numbers for £250 minimum.

Canada is different. Eight digits of whatever you like. Andy Blud (name miss-spelt for data protection reasons) sent me this picture:

Cool or what?!

What's the last thing you need? An undertaker with a sense of humour!

Sports Report
Stoke are currently 10th in the Premier League and have been linked with Rude-Man-Nistleroy (or something like that) in the transfer window. You don't kid the editor that easily! This looks like an excellent smoke screen to divert attention away from the real goings on.

Vale and Crewe are 14th and 12th respectively but not in the same division.

Man U were beaten soundly at home by Leeds in the third round of the F.A. Cup.
